AUM Silences Tigers in 6-2 Setback

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama baseball team broke up a no-hitter in the ninth by Josh Smith as the Tigers (16-10) fell 6-2 to Auburn Montgomery on Tuesday evening at Tartt Field.
 
Smith (6-1) pitched eight innings in the win with four strikeouts and a pair of walks. After surrendering a Tiger hit, Sam Judah came on in relief, allowing a run on one hit with two strikeouts and a walk. 

Douglas Frazier logged the Red and White's first hit of the night with a leadoff single to center field to begin the ninth. The Northport, Ala.-senior scored a batter later when Brian Simone singled to center for UWA's second hit. Marc Mahler, who walked earlier in the inning, scored on a Kevin Deese sacrifice fly to right. 

AUM (13-16) posted five of its six runs with two outs, plating three runs in the first and a two in the third inning. The final Senator run came in the sixth as Will Sellars grounded out to Clint Alford at second but pushed Tanner Williams across the dish for the sixth run of the outing. 

UWA starter Moses Munoz (0-1) was saddled with the loss. The San Antonio, Texas-senior surrendered five runs on seven hits in four innings of action. The Southern Miss transfer recorded four walks and three hits. Josh Varner and Jason Howell each tossed two innings in relief as JB Black pitched the final inning on the bump. The Tiger hurlers allowed just three hits and a run in the final five innings of action. 

West Alabama returns to Gulf South Conference action on Saturday, Mar. 27 as UWA travels to Valdosta State. First pitch of the conference doubleheader on Saturday in scheduled for 12:00 p.m. CST. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN 104.9 and at www.uwaathletics.com.
