Delta State Downs Tiger Netters

LIVINGSTON, Ala.  The University of West Alabama men's and women's tennis team fell to Gulf South Conference West foe Delta State on Thursday at the Vaughan Tennis Complex on the UWA campus.  DSU downed the UWA men 5-1, while the Lady Statesmen blanked the Tigers 5-0.

The setback to the Green and White snapped a three-game winning streak for both UWA squads.  UWA will embark on a five-match Spring Break road trip that will begin on Friday in the state of South Carolina and end in Orlando, Fla.  The UWA men enter the trip with a 13-5 overall record.  The women's squad carries a 12-6 season's mark into the trip.

In the men's match, the Red and White dropped a pair of hard fought 9-7 doubles matches and claimed the third doubles point after the Tiger tandem of Danish Ahmad and Benny Delgado Rochas topped DSU's pairing of Marco Heinzleman and Alexandre Waeters, 8-2.  UWA's Alvaro De La Torre, Juan Felipe Tellez and Wade Covington all dropped singles matches.

In the women's match, DSU raced out to a 3-0 lead after turning in wins at all three spots.  The Lady Statesmen closed out the match with a pair of wins in singles at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions.  DSU's Cecile Benzaki won in straight sets over UWA's Emily Gerding, 6-0, 6-4.  UWA's Angy Cuellar lost to Lucia Laws, 6-4, 6-1.

The Tigers will face Benedict College, based in Columbia, S.C, on Friday, March 26.  Match time is set for Noon.
