LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama baseball team split a doubleheader with West Florida on Friday evening as UWA (19-14, 2-6 Gulf South Conference) claimed the opening outing 6-4. The Argonauts (25-13, 6-2 GSC) took game two 10-7.
After a 4-all deadlock in the nightcap, UWF plated five runs in the fifth, taking a 9-4 lead. Tyler Hastings recorded two of the five runs in the inning with a single to right field, scoring Jack Materne and Greg Pron. UWA nipped the Blue and Green's lead to 9-7 with a three run, sixth inning. Dallas Rogers scored on an Argo miscue for the first run of the inning. Brian Simone and Kevin Deese posted consecutive base hits to drive in a run each. UWF widened its lead with an insurance run in the seventh.
Daniel Vargas-Vila (2-0) logged the win on the hill with 5.2 innings of work, allowing seven runs on 12 hits. Zach North (2) pitched the final 1.1 innings, giving up just a hit.
Cory Lopez (1-5) took the loss with 4.1 innings. The Walker, La.-native allowed eight runs on 10 hits with six strikeouts and a walk.
UWA answered a four run, sixth inning by the Argos with three runs in the bottom of the frame to capture the opening game win. The Tigers three runs scored off the bat of Dallas Rogers. Jay Jennings and Sam McCormack both scored on the fielder's choice and Rogers scored as the ball got away on a throw by Ryan Day. The Red and White jumped out to a 3-0 lead after a scoreless four and a half innings. Back-to-back singles from Kevin Deese and Brian Simone scored the first two runs of the game. Colin McKeen later drew a bases loaded walk to push Douglas Frazier across the dish.
Josh Varner (2-0) tossed 2.1 innings in relief to pick up the win on the mound. The Brandon, Miss.-native allowed a hit with a pair of strikeouts and walks. Brian Burgess (8) garnered the save with a strikeout. UWA starter Colter Millican pitched 5.2 innings, surrendering four runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and three walks.
Jason Postill (2-1) was saddled with his first loss of the season. The UWF starter allowed five runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
