JACKSON, Miss. – The University of West Alabama softball team split its final non-conference doubleheader as UWA topped Millsaps College, 8-2 in the opener before the Majors rebounded to claim game two, 7-3.
The Tigers (38-21) now turn their focus to the final weekend of Gulf South Conference play. The Saturday twinbill at UAH and Sunday's two-game set at West Georgia have post season implications on the line. UWA and UNA enter the final weekend tied for the fourth and final GSC Tournament spot.
In the win, UWA took an early 1-0 lead after a complete inning and had to come-from-behind after the Majors plated a pair of runs in the fourth. The Red and White erupted for seven runs in the final two at bats to post the win. In the four-run sixth, Lauren Mills drove in the first run on a single to left. Ashley Frost connected on her first home run as a Tiger with a three-run blast to highlight the frame.
UWA expanded the lead in the seventh with a three spot. A two-out walk by Angela Hanna kept the inning alive as Jessica Powell roped the first of back-to-back doubles as Hanna scored on the play. Powell was pated on Angela Smith's two-bagger. Smith later scored on a wild pitch. Smith led UWA at the dish with three hits. Mills and Kelli Hartley added a pair of hits.
Junior Katie Ford (25-6) picked up the win as she tossed six innings before being lifted for Hannah Griffin. Ford was touched for eight hits and a pair of earned runs. The Garden City, Kan.-native finished with six strikeouts.
In the night cap, MC raced out to a 5-0 lead after three innings and plated two more runs in the fifth before UWA scratched the board with a run in the sixth. Griffin saddled the loss in the contest after allowing five runs on six hits in her two innings of work in the circle. The Majors' final two runs came off Hannah Billingsley, who tossed the 2.2 innings pitched.
The Tiger offense produced eight hits, but stranded eight on the base paths. A trio of Tigers each had multiple hits in the setback – Anna Shartzer, Powell and Jennifer Lillard. Powell drove in two of UWA's three runs with a single in the seventh. Hartley scored UWA's lone run in the sixth.
UWA and UAH will get underway at 2 p.m. on the UAH campus on Saturday. Sunday's DH with UWG is slated for a Noon CST start.
