LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama dropped another tough five-setter Friday night, losing a 3-2 contest to West Georgia at Pruitt Hall. The Tigers' record falls to 4-9 (0-2 Gulf South Conference) while the Wolves improve to 4-11 (1-1 GSC).
Alexis McHale recorded a team-best 31 assists in the contest and now has 2,977 for her career. She is attempting to become just the second Tiger in program history to reach the 3,000 plateau.
Drawing first blood in the contest, UWA opened the match with a 25-22 victory in the first set, but the visitors responded by taking the second 26-24. West Georgia took control of the match with a 25-23 victory in the third, but the Tigers fought back with a 25-21 win in the fourth to force a fifth frame for a second consecutive game.
While it did not contain nearly as much edge-of-your-seat drama as the final frame in Huntsville on Tuesday night did, the fifth set was certainly in doubt late as the score was knotted at 11 before the Wolves scored the next four points to leave Livingston with the victory.
Three members of the Red and White recorded double-figures in kills as Katelyn Beardshear turned in a match-high 17 while Olivia Drew and Thais Hollerbach chipped in with 11 each. Hollerbach and Beardshear both finished the night with a double-double as the pair also turned in 14 digs apiece.
Joining the pair with a solid defensive performance was Casey Byrnes who led all players in the match with 28 digs.
The Tigers collected 10 blocks on the evening and Olivia Drew paced UWA by joining in on five blocks.
UWA will attempt to get in the GSC win column with a 3 p.m. contest against Valdosta State on Saturday. Fans should note that the game time is a change from what had been scheduled earlier. Live stats will be available at www.uwaathletics.com.
