Top 25 Foes Bid for Conference Crown; UWA Travels to Delta State

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The No. 18 University of West Alabama football team seeks at least a share of the Gulf South Conference title on Saturday, Nov. 5 as the Tigers (7-2, 2-1 GSC) travel to Cleveland, Miss., for a top 25 battle with top ranked Delta State. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.

The last time the Red and White staked claim to the conference crown was 1971 when UWA split the honor with Troy.

Saturday's contest marks the 57th meeting between West Alabama and Delta State and is the second longest standing series in UWA history behind North Alabama. DSU has got the best of the series with 33 wins. Last season, the two teams squared off in a classic shootout with the Statesmen walking away with a 41-37 win in Cleveland. DSU has won all, but two of the last 11 meetings. The Tigers last victory in the Delta was Sept. 28, 2002.

The top 25 clash will be the second consecutive for the Tigers and the third this season. UWA upset then-fifth ranked North Alabama 31-26 last weekend. Earlier in the campaign the Red and White dropped a 22-21 decision at Valdosta State.

In the upset over the Lions, UWA amassed 352 yards of total offense behind career-highs from Ken May and Kyle Caldwell. May hauled in 121 yards receiving on three receptions – leading him to GSC Offensive Player of the Week accolades – while Caldwell threw for 209 yards – surpassing his previous high of 206 at West Georgia the week prior. Matt Willis tallied his eighth straight game with 100-plus yards as he totaled 111 on the ground, inching him closer to the single-season rushing record of 1,325. For the season, Willis has accumulated 1,136 yards on the ground.

Linebackers Deon Lacey and Gabe Poe along with Shontral Ford pilot the Tiger defensive unit. The trio of tacklers has each garnered 50-plus stops on the season led by Lacey's 74. Poe, who guided the Red and White last season in the category, stands second on the squad with 55 while Ford has tallied 53 stops.

Delta State returns to action after a bye week and a 36-33 victory over then-No. 10 Valdosta State. In the comeback win, the Green and White converted on five, fourth downs in the game as Brant Botill completed the rally scoring from three-yards out with less than a minute remaining to secure the triumph.

DSU signal caller Micah Davis continues to direct one of the nation's top passing attacks as the senior has completed 210-of-337 passes for 2,575 yards with 17 TDs and 10 INTs.  Davis has also rushed for eight TDs on the season. Ixavier Triplett headlines a quartet of Statesmen tacklers with 40 or more stops this season as Triplett has registered 52 tackles on the campaign.
