AMERICUS, Ga. – Behind the strength of an offensive barrage, the University of West Alabama baseball team won the first game of its doubleheader at Georgia Southwestern on Saturday by a 13-10 score. In the nightcap, the Tigers fell in an 8-1 decision and now sit at 2-3 on the season.
Georgia Southwestern is 2-4.
After falling behind 2-0 as the hosts scored a run in both the first and second innings, the Tigers used a big top half of the fourth to take the lead for the first time.
Ladarrius Cole began the frame with his first triple in an UWA uniform and was knocked in when
Chris Duncan reached on an infield single. Following a walk drawn by Brian Simone, Kevin Deese belted one over the right field fence to give the Tigers a 4-1 advantage.
The top half of the order continued its assault on Hurricane starter Trent Franzago (0-2) as it scored three additional runs off of him in the fifth.
UWA rapped eight hits and scored seven runs off of Franzago to give him the loss.
The Tigers added four more runs in the sixth while tacking on one in both the seventh and eighth to produced what appeared to be a commanding 13-4 advantage, but the hosts made the affair interesting by hanging six on the board in the bottom of the ninth for the 13-10 final.
Eight of the nine spots in the UWA lineup produced at least a hit, and Duncan led the way with a 3-for-5 performance. He also scored three times while driving in a pair.
Deese – who finished the game with a team-best four RBI – was joined by Cole,
Micah Reaves, Colin McKeen and Jay Jennings in collecting a pair of hits. Joining Duncan in scoring three times was Brian Simone who went 1-for-3 at the dish while also drawing a pair of walks.
The run support was more than enough to give
Colter Millican (1-1) his first victory of the season. He exited the game an out into the sixth having allowed six hits and three earned runs while striking out three.
Neal Lambert and Colton Henderson were strong in relief as neither allowed a hit in their outings, and Henderson struck out the side in his inning of work.
The lone sore spot in the contest was the three errors committed by the Tigers, and miscues wound up being UWA's bugaboo in the nightcap.
The Hurricanes scored four runs in the first two innings off of
Barry Meeks (0-1), but only two of those runs were earned as West Alabama committed three errors in the two frames.
The runs would hold up for the hosts as the Tigers were only able to muster one run off of four hits. That run came in the fifth when Clint Brown knocked in McKeen who had singled earlier in the frame.
Zach Whitman (1-1) earned the victory in the seven-inning contest.
The two teams will wrap up the series on Sunday with another doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. CST.
