AMERICUS, Ga. – The University of West Alabama baseball team racked up 27 hits on the day, but ultimately split its doubleheader at Georgia Southwestern on Sunday. The Tigers took game one by an 11-1 score before falling in extra innings by a 10-9 score in the finale, giving UWA a 3-4 record on the year. The Hurricanes are now 3-5.
The day's first game was much like the first on Saturday as the Tigers piled up 14 hits and scored 11 times. Each of the 11 Tigers that recorded official at-bats had at least one hit while
Deon Williams picked up one of UWA's three walks when he entered as a pinch hitter in the ninth to ensure that all 12 offensive players reached base safely.
The Tigers began the day with a big inning, setting the tone with a four-run first. Each of the first four batters in the lineup reached safely and came around to score.
Micah Reaves had the big hit in the inning as his double knocked in
Chris Duncan and Brian Simone.
Reaves would finish the game with a team-best three RBI.
After letting the Hurricanes get one of the runs back in their half of the first, the top of the lineup would again put a crooked number up on the board for the Red and White. Simone's fourth double of the season came in the frame and knocked in Ladarius Cole, one of the three runs UWA scored en route to knocking out Georgia Southwestern starter Jody Sellars (0-1).
Sellars one inning while facing four batters in the second, giving up five hits and seven runs.
Colin McKeen stroked his first home run of the season in the fifth to put West Alabama up 8-1 and that was more than enough run support for Tiger starter Jeb Huber (2-0). The Ponchatoula, La. native tossed six solid innings, scattering four hits while allowing just the one unearned run.
Strong in relief,
Taylor Bratton (1) pitched the final three innings of the game and did not surrender a hit in picking up his first save of the year.
Matching Cole and Simone with a pair of hits in the first game was Jeremy Rice, while Simone and McKeen joined Reaves with multi-RBI performances as both notched two. Cole swiped two bags in the contest and added another pair in the nightcap to give the speedy center fielder six on the young season.
Picking up 13 more hits in the series finale, it appeared as if UWA would sweep the day as it led by a 7-3 score going into the Hurricane half of the sixth. Southwestern proceeded to score three in the sixth, and the Tigers responded by tacking on a run in the top of the seventh but it would not be enough as two more GSW runs crossed the plate in the bottom frame to force extras.
In the UWA half of the eighth, Rice hit a two-out triple to the gap in right-center to score Kevin Deese and put the Tigers back up by a run at 9-8.
Josh Varner (0-1) came on in relief of Brian Burgess in GSW half of the eighth, and he quickly found himself in trouble after issuing a leadoff walk to Michel Coffey and giving up a bunt single to Sellars. A sacrifice bunt moved the two into scoring position, setting up a game-tying double by Andrew Anderson.
Setting up a potential double play, Varner intentionally walked Corey Benson, but he followed that up by hitting John Duran to force in the winning run.
Gary Carden pitched two innings of relief to earn the victory.
The Tigers would not have been in position to lose the affair had the team not combined to commit seven errors. The untidy play was particularly unkind to Burgess who gave up five runs in 3.2 innings of work but only two of the scores were earned.
Things could not have gone much better on the offensive side of things, however, starting with Cole's stellar 4-for-5, two RBI performance from the top spot. He also scored twice, keeping him on top of UWA ledger with nine runs on the season.
Simone was also strong in the contest as he went 2-for-3 including his team-leading fifth double. The Amherstburg, Ontario native drew a pair of walks as well and scored twice while also driving in two runs. McKeen also collected two hits and two RBI as he belted his second homer of the day, a 2-run shot in the sixth.
Deese finished with two hits, too, to round out the Tigers who had a multi-hit game.
The Tigers will return to action on Friday, Feb. 18 when they welcome Lynn to town for a four-game set. The home opener is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and can be heard on ESPN 104.9 FM.
