LIVINGSTON, Ala. – An 11-0 blowout coupled with a thrilling 3-2 victory in the final at-bat of the nightcap gave the University of West Alabama baseball team a sweep of its doubleheader against visiting Lynn on Saturday afternoon at Tartt Field. UWA is now 5-5 on the season while the Fighting Knights drop to 4-5.
Trailing 2-1 going into the seventh of the day's second game, the Tigers got to Lynn closer Jason Whelan (0-1) for the second consecutive day, and on this occasion it resulted in a victory as opposed to Friday's comeback effort that fell just short.
With one out in the final frame, Clint Brown produced a pinch-hit single to get things started for the Red and White, and Jeremy Rice followed it up with a walk in his own pinch-hit situation. That free pass moved
Coleman McClendon – in the ballgame running for Brown – into scoring position for Jay Jennings. He singled up the middle allowing McClendon to score the tying run, and Rice alertly moved up to third base on the throw attempting to get McClendon at the plate.
Jennings now has three multi-hit performances in a row while also boasting a six-game hitting streak.
Following an intentional walk of
Ladarrius Cole to setup a potential double play,
Chris Duncan singled to second, and Rice scored easily for UWA's second victory of the day.
Brian Burgess (1-0) picked up the win as he tossed a strong 1.2 innings in relief, including inducing an inning-ending double play with the Fighting Knights threatening to tack on insurance runs in the sixth. He replaced
Barry Meeks who pitched a serviceable 5.1 innings.
The UWA starter scattered four hits and allowed the two Lynn runs, but only one was earned. He also struck out four on the afternoon.
The first run of the game for West Alabama tied it up at one, and it came on
Micah Reaves' second home run of the season – a long fly to left in the fourth. Lynn quickly regained the lead by responding with a run in the fifth.
The first contest of the afternoon was not as close, but the seventh frame in it was close to being just as exciting for UWA fans.
Eleven Tigers appeared at the plate in the frame as the team exploded for six runs after entering the inning just up 2-0. Jennings, Brian Simone, Brown, and Joseph Reed all had hits in inning; Colin McKeen reached on a walk; and Cole and Duncan both reached on errors.
Simone and Deese combined for back-to-back two-RBI hits as Simone singled and Deese picked up his second double of the contest. For good measure, Deese added a three-run jack – also his second homer of the season – in the eighth to give the slugger five runs driven in for the contest.
The pair was joined by Jennings in recording three hits apiece as the Tigers totaled 17 in the game.
West Alabama would have been in fine shape even if it had not had the big inning as Jeb Huber (3-0) won his third consecutive start to begin the season, and he was quite outstanding in holding the Fighting Knights to just four hits in eight strong innings. The lefty walked just one while striking out six to give him a team-best 13 on the season.
Jason Beaumont (1-1) picked up the loss for Lynn.
The teams will conclude the series on Sunday morning with the Tigers looking for their first series victory of the year. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. and can be heard on ESPN 104.9 FM and at www.espn1049.com.
