LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Going into extra innings for the third consecutive series finale, the University of West Alabama baseball team dropped a 7-3 game to visiting Lynn as the two teams split the series at two games each. UWA falls to 5-6 on the year while the Fighting Knights improve to 5-5.
The Tigers drew first blood in the game as Jay Jennings continued his hot ways at the plate with a two-out single down the left field line in the UWA half of the second that scored Clint Brown and Jeremy Rice.
Jennings finished the four-game set with eight hits in 15 at-bats while driving in seven runs, and he now leads the squad with a .364 average on the season.
The game remained tilted towards the hosts until things went awry in fourth. The Fighting Knights took advantage of four Tiger miscues in the inning and crossed the plate three times to take the lead despite not recording a hit.
It was the latest bad luck for UWA starter
Taylor Bratton.
The lefty tossed eight solid innings as he scattered four hits while not walking a batter and striking out three. He was charged with the three runs but none earned, and he did not factor in the decision while keeping his ERA at 0.00 for the season. He was charged with a loss earlier in the year without giving up an earned run.
Ladarrius Cole scored the tying run in the seventh after he led off the frame with his second double of the season.
Micah Reaves laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to advance Cole, and the speedster was able to score easily after a wild pitch from Lynn starter Kyle Wolfe.
Despite several opportunities for both sides, the score would remain even at three until Lynn was able to plate four in the 11th. Again the visitors were able to score multiple runs without the benefit of a hit as the only one recorded in the frame was a two-RBI single from Austin Smith.
UWA threatened in the bottom frame, but Shawn Kale (1-0) stranded a pair of runners to end the game and pick up his first victory of the year. He threw three innings of relief of Wolfe who picked up seven strikeouts on the day.
The Tigers will have the next four days off before welcoming another Sunshine State Conference team to Tartt Field. Nova Southeastern will be in town for a four-game set beginning on Friday. First pitch for Friday's doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
