LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Looking to keep its four-game winning streak alive, the University of West Alabama baseball team travels to Hattiesburg, Miss., on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. road contest against William Carey. The Tigers enter the game with a 13-8 mark, while the Crusaders own a 14-10 record.
The Tigers are playing strong baseball, having won 10 of their last 13 contests after starting the season going 3-5.
While the UWA offense has been solid, it has been the pitching staff that has keyed the run of success. The group has an ERA of 2.88, and it has limited batters to just a .219 batting average. Hits for extra bases have been tough to come by as well as the Tigers have given up just 28 doubles, a triple and three home runs.
Taylor Bratton – a probable starter for the midweek contest – has the staff's best ERA at 0.99, while Colter Millican leads with 24 strikeouts. Newcomer Jeb Huber is second to Millican with 23 strikeouts and features the team's best record at 4-1.
Offensively, the trio of Brian Simone, Kevin Deese, and Ladarrius Cole continues to lead the way from their positions at the top of the lineup. The group hits at .375, .370, and .356, respectively, and also pace the team in other categories.
Simone has racked up the most doubles with nine, while Deese's 20 RBI are the most on the UWA ledger. Collecting 31 hits, Cole is tops there while also having a team-high 11 steals.
William Carey enters the afternoon affair coming off of a series victory over Loyola University (La.) as the Crusaders won two of three. Just prior to that, the team split a two-game set with Gulf South Conference member Southern Arkansas.
The William Carey offense features five batters that hit over .300 including Javier Ortiz who hits at .409 on the year.
