LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama dropped the series finale with Alabama in Huntsville on Sunday at Tartt Field as all three games in the series were decided by one run. The 5-4 score in favor of the Chargers improved the squad to 20-11 (5-3 Gulf South Conference), while UWA drops to 15-10 (2-3 GSC).
After UAH scored a pair of runs in the top of the first, the top of the Tiger lineup recorded three consecutive hits as Kevin Deese knocked in
Ladarrius Cole to cut the lead in half at 2-1 after the bottom frame.
A fourth-inning home run by Mike Love – just the fourth homer allowed all season by UWA pitching and the first given up by starter
Barry Meeks – put the visitors on top 3-1, and the score remained that way until bottom half of the seventh inning.
Jay Jennings recorded a two-out single, and Cole kept the inning alive as he reached on a two-base error to put runners at second and third for Brian Simone.
His second hit of the day, Simone drove one into left for his team-leading 12th double of the year to plate Jennings and Cole and tie the game at 3-3. The pair of RBI gives him 22, just one shy of Deese who paces the team with 23.
The visitors responded with a pair of runs off of Josh Varner (0-2) in the top of the eighth, but the Red and White answered with a run of their own in the inning as
Micah Reaves scored after doubling with one out when Jeremy Rice reached on a Charger defensive miscue.
The Tigers, however, were unable to mount any ninth-inning heroics as Eric Parker (1) pitched the final two innings to pick up the save. David Kendrick (3-1) earned the victory while tossing an inning and a third of relief.
UWA returns to action on Wednesday when they host William Carey at Tartt Field at 4 p.m.
