PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Alabama baseball team dropped a pair of close games on Saturday, falling by scores of 4-3 and 2-0 to No. 1 West Florida to extend its winless streak to a season-long four. The losses drop UWA to 16-14 (3-7 Gulf South Conference) while the Argos improve to an impressive 33-4 (9-1 GSC).
In the nightcap, UWF pitcher Ben Hawkins (9-0) etched his name into the record books by tossing a no-hitter in the seven-inning contest. He was stellar in the outing as he struck out 12 batters while allowing just four men to reach base – two walks and two hit batsmen.
His performance overshadowed that of UWA starter
Barry Meeks (3-3) who threw a strong game that would have been a winning effort on most any other day.
The Sweet Water, Ala., native scattered just five hits over six innings of work, striking out three while not issuing a free pass on the evening. Only one of the two runs UWF scored in the game was earned as the Argos took advantage of a pair of miscues to score the game's first tally in the first.
The day's second game was a much different affair from the first contest as the teams combined for 24 hits in that one.
Ladarrius Cole and Brian Simone accounted for half of West Alabama's 12 hits as both recorded three in the contest, and it was that pair that produced the first run of the day for the Tigers.
Cole singled with one out in the frame and advanced to second thanks to a walk drawn by
Deon Williams, putting him in position to score when Simone singled into right to make the score 2-1 after the Argos had struck first with a pair of runs in the second inning.
Making the hosts pay for unintentionally intentionally walking Kevin Deese, Colin McKeen shot one through the left side to score Williams and knot the game up at 2-2.
After allowing UWF to tack on a run in both the fourth and fifth, the Tigers trailed 4-2 going into the eighth. Facing Kevin Peters – one of seven Argo pitchers to boast a sub-3.00 ERA – the Red and White loaded the bases with one out in the inning to force West Florida to go to its impressive closer Shane Waller (7).
Pulling through with a pinch-hit base knock,
Trent Johnson singled through the right side to score McKeen who had walked earlier in the inning.
Micah Reaves tried to score the tying run on the play, but Greg Pron came up with an impressive throw from right to nail Reaves at the plate and ultimately preserve the victory.
Cole picked up his third hit of the game in the top of the ninth, but Waller retired the next three Tigers to register the save.
Jeb Huber (4-2) worked around allowing 11 hits to give up just four runs, only two of which were earned as the Tigers committed a pair of errors that led to the two runs the Argos scored in the second. He struck out three and walked two.
Staying perfect on the season, Jason Postill (9-0) earned the win for West Florida.
The two teams will wrap up the series on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m., and the contest can be heard on ESPN 104.9 FM and at www.espn1049.com.
