HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of West Alabama tennis teams rebounded on Saturday as both the men's and women's teams defeated Division I institution Alabama A&M to round out the regular season. The 6-3 victory gives the men a 14-9 mark while the women won 5-4 to move to 15-8.
On the men's side, each point the Tigers won came without surrendering a single game to the hosts.
Lucas Cruz teamed up with
Juan Felipe Tellez and joined the pair of
Wade Covington and
Santiago Lopez with 8-0 wins in doubles action. In singles play, Covington joined
Lucas Cruz,
Clay Cooke and
Wes Taylor as all four won 6-0, 6-0.
The ladies started the match out with a 2-0 lead as A&M did not field six players for the match. One of the other three points came in doubles as
Angy Cuellar and
Emily Gerding teamed up for an 8-3 win. Gerding proceeded to also win in singles as she was a 6-1, 6-0 victor, and
Dasha Popova picked up the other UWA point with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout.
The ladies will move on now to the Gulf South Conference Tournament in which they own the No. 3 seed from the East Division and will take on the No. 2 from the West Division. The tournament begins on Friday, Apr. 15.
