FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Sadie Beam,
Tazra Pitts and
Morgan Ray each registered double-digit kills as the University of West Alabama volleyball team knocked off home-standing Nova Southeastern, 3-2, Friday.
With the win, UWA brings to an end a nine-match losing streak and moves to 10-12 overall on the season. The Sharks fall to 4-15 with the loss.
It was a back-and-forth battle throughout the five games played between the two teams. Nova Southeastern struck first with a 25-20 first game win -- the fourth-straight set the Tigers lost on the day after UWA fell 3-0 to Lynn to begin the doubleheader.
West Alabama showed great resiliency the rest of the way against the Sharks, starting with an impressive showing in the second game. It was there where UWA jumped out quickly, taking an 18-12 lead in the set. Nova Southeastern then rolled off six-straight points to tie the set at 18-18 before game finally ended with
Chelsea Payne's service ace in the 26-24 Tiger win.
With the match tied at 1-1, UWA once again jumped out to a large lead in the third game, only to see the Sharks come storming back. Much like they did in the second set, the Tigers staved off the Shark rally to pick up the win, 25-21.
Up 6-3 in the fourth, West Alabama was then unable to hold off a stiff Nova Southeastern rally as the match went to the fifth game. In the fifth, UWA led the entire way in the 15-11 win to take the match.
Beam led the Tigers with 15 kills against Nova Southeastern, while
Tazra Pitts and
Morgan Ray combined for 21.
