PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Alabama men's soccer team (9-2, 5-1 GSC) fell to the West Florida Argos (6-2-1, 5-0-1 GSC) Friday evening in front of 1,049 spectators at the UWF Soccer Complex.
With the loss, the Tigers suffer the program's first-ever Gulf South Conference defeat. Now at 5-1 in the GSC, UWA falls to second place in the league standings just behind the Argos.
West Alabama saw just two shots on goal Friday evening, compared to five from UWF. The Argos were able to make the most of their opportunities with two goals scored on the night.
Dillon Gallet and Stephen Munoz each scored their second goals of the season against the Tigers, which proved to be the difference in the contest.
It was Munoz who first found the net and broke open a scoreless game at the 30:43 mark after he scored off a through ball from Igor Diaz to give his team the 1-0 halftime advantage.
Playing in front of a large Homecoming crowd, West Florida then sealed the match at 57 minutes when Stephen Munoz scored off a quick pass from teammate Dillon Gallet. That score would the last of the game as the Argos held on for the 2-0 victory.
West Alabama was led on the night by freshman
Clay Green, who registered both of UWA's shots on goal, while teammate
Jack Moore recorded a game-high three saves in the loss.
The Tigers now face another traditional soccer power when coach
Matthew Thorne's team takes on Palm Beach Atlantic on Sunday at 1 p.m.
