Vitor Gazza scored on a header on an assist by
Thibault Charmey in the 39th minute to defeat Gulf South Conference's second ranked Shorter 2-1 on Friday. For Gazza, it was his first game-winning goal of the season.
"The lads did a great job," said UWA head men's soccer coach
Matthew Thorne.
"We did a good job of moving the ball around in the first half, but were unfortunate to give up a penalty kick. In the end we did a great job of coming back after being 1-1 to take the lead and keep it. They pushed hard at the end and created a lot of chances, but our lads showed great character to get the win."
West Alabama's (7-3-1, 4-3-1 GSC)
Clay Green became the team's leading scorer with his sixth goal in the 8th minute on an assist by Charmey. Shorter (6-3-2, 5-2-1) entered the match unbeaten in eight of its last nine matches.
The Hawk's lone goal came by way of a penalty kick by Irvin Espinal in the 31st minute to tie the match at 1-1 heading into halftime.
The Tigers were out-shot 13-7; 9-3 on-goal. Starting goalkeeper
Lavares Stone (6-1-1) posted a season high of eight saves including seven in the second half. Stone now has 31 saves this year (.838 save percentage).
UWA men's soccer will return to the road to take on Lee on Tuesday. The match is set for 7 p.m. in Cleveland, Tenn.Â
