Box Score 2 CARROLLTON, Ga. – West Alabama responded to a 3-0 loss to Saint Leo with a 3-2 victory over Lynn University in the final day of the West Georgia Crossover Tournament on Saturday.
"Today we had a hard fought team effort," said UWA volleyball head coach
Jordan Lay.
"We gave up a few sets the weekend because of our own errors, but these girls never gave up and kept fighting. Their hard work finally paid off. We are happy to be back in the win column and this is the type of win that we needed going into a tough conference week."
West Alabama (9-11) snaps a seven match losing skid while breaking Lynn's (15-8) nine set win streak. The Tigers took sets one (25-13) three (25-18) and five (17-15) and dropped sets two (25-15) and four (25-23). Saint Leo (15-6) picked up its first win of the tournament by sweeping the Tigers 25-18, 25-14 and 25-19.
The Lions posted 49 kills and the second best attack percentage by an UWA opponent with .346 overall while holding the Tigers to 23 kills and a .095 percentage.
Lauren Campbell led Saint Leo with 18 kills totaling a .400 percentage. Jaclyn Mailoto tallied 39 assists.
Yanesha Johnson led the Tigers with nine kills followed by
Morgan Ray with seven. Â
Carly Wehling recorded a volleyball version of a triple-double against Lynn. Wehling recorded 13 kills (.211 attack percentage), 21 assists and 13 digs. Â Â
Sadie Beam and
Jessica Voyles also posted double-digit kill marks. Beam led with 15 (.417 attack percentage) as well as 13 digs while Voyles ended with 14 (.429).
Callie Murphy led with 25 assists.
Lynn's Angie Caple recorded her season-high of 20 kills while teammate Marissa Tandron posted a career-high of 58 assists.
UWA will now return to its home court to take on Gulf South Conference opponent Lee University on Friday. The match is set for 7 p.m. in Pruitt Hall.
