UWA Falls 2-1 To Nationally Ranked UWF

Box Score

PENSACOLA, Fla. – West Florida's Felipe Oliveira scored late in the 70th minute defeat West Alabama 2-1 in Gulf South Conference action on Friday.

"Of course we are always disappointed to lose, but I am very proud of every one of my players for their effort the put in tonight," said UWA head men's soccer coach Matthew Thorne.

"West Florida is a top class team and when you play at this level the game comes down to the smallest details. Unfortunately they scored two and we had our chances but ran out of time in the end. We will just push on and look forward to our next game on Sunday."

West Alabama (5-3-1, 3-3-1 GSC) has now dropped its last three matches after beginning the season on a six game unbeaten streak. Nationally ranked 21st West Florida (7-2, 6-1) improves it's win streak to four to remain in the top two of the conference.

The Argonauts held the Tigers to a season low of nine shots. UWF's Fernando Silveira put the Argonauts up first with a goal in the 33rd minute.
Sophomore Clay Green stole a pass from a UWF defender to the goalkeeper to score the equalizer five minutes later.

"Clay was an absolute animal out there tonight and caused their back line all sorts of problems," said Thorne. "All of his teammates played with great quality as well."

Freshman goalie Evan Pidgeon received his third start of the season to fall to 1-2. Pidgeon recorded six saves.

UWA men's soccer now returns home to take on Concordia College on Sunday. The match is set for 3 p.m. in Tiger Stadium.
