UWA Tennis Defeats Jackson State for First Time

JACKSON, Miss. – West Alabama men's and women's tennis teams defeated Jackson State for the first time in school history on Friday. The men won 5-2 and the women 7-2.  

Both teams now improve to a three match win streak. The men advance to 9-2 on the season and the women move to 9-3.

“I am extremely proud of our improvement through each match,” said UWA head coach Glenn Fanelli. “Senior Jill Furlong played outstanding singles and doubles today. She and Adam Drysdale sealed the deal for us against a very strong Jackson State team.”

West Alabama's No. 1 women's doubles, Jill Furlong and Natalia Cardenas defeated JSU's Harshini Reddy and Kesica Jayapalan 8-4.  UWA's No. 1 men's doubles, Adam Drysdale and Anton Ivanov defeated Jose Lugue and Carlos Martinez 8-2.

Furlong remained solid through singles action taking on Reddy. Furlong fell in set one 4-6, but responded by taking the final two sets 6-0 and 6-4.  Nestor Vargas picked up the win in the men's No. 1 matchup by winning 6-0, 6-1 in two swift sets.

Both men's and women's teams now return to Gulf South Conference action tomorrow to take on Christian Brothers at 1:00 p.m. in Memphis, Tennessee.
