Box Score 2 HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Alabama-Huntsville scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat West Alabama 3-2 in game one of a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Saturday at Charger Park. UAH never trailed in game two to complete the sweep with a 4-1 victory.
“We played well and competed especially in game one, but offensively we are continuing to struggle,” said UWA head coach
Gary Rundles. “We are just not scoring runs for some reason, which puts a lot of pressure on our pitching staff.”
West Alabama entered the series third in the GSC, but will drop in the standings with a 13-9 conference record, 21-23 overall. UAH remains in second place with a 14-4-1 GSC record, 31-11-1 overall.
Andrew Busby (6-2) went the distance in the first game to pick up the win for UAH. Busby allowed only four hits and struck out six.
Brett Ivey (3-5) took the loss in relief. UWA starter
Taylor Bratton struck out seven over seven innings.
Dana Wright (4-2) also notched a complete-game victory in the nightcap for the Chargers, allowing just one run while striking out seven.
Barry Meeks (3-4) was tagged for all four UAH runs to pick up the loss.
UAH's centerfielder Cody Burton tripled in the bottom of the eighth inning for his only hit of game one to put the Chargers ahead for the first time at 2-1. Burton was chased home by first baseman Chandler Brock for the game-winning run.
Mitch Holgate led the Tigers at the plate, finishing 2-for-4.
UAH right fielder Conner McCain drove in two runs in the second game, while teammate Chandler Brock went 4-for-4 with an RBI.
Matthew Magee was 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Tigers.
West Alabama wraps up its final GSC road trip with the series finale at Alabama-Huntsville on Sunday. Game time is 1 p.m. at Charger Park.
“A win tomorrow is critical for us,” said Rundles. “We are running out of games and you don't want to drop three with only one series left. Offensively we have to put things together.”
