Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – West Alabama couldn't hold on to an early lead due mainly to commiting a a season-high four errors on the way to a 5-3 loss to Alabama-Huntsville in Gulf South Conference baseball action Sunday at Charger Park.
“When the game started we were locked in and ready to play,” said UWA head coach
Gary Rundles. “However, as the game went on we made some defensive mistakes.
"Unfortunately, in this game you are going to have that, but if you're season has gone like ours has it tends to magnify itself," Rundles said. "From an offensive standpoint we put ourselves in a position to win.”
West Alabama looked to have addressed its recent offensive woes as its first four hitetrs reached base in the top of the first inning to jump to a 2-0 lead. However, the Tigers went on to give up four errors to fall to 21-24 overall, 13-10 in the GSC. Alabama-Huntsville notched its second come-from-behind victory on the weekend to complete the series sweep over UWA to improve to 15-4-1 int he GSC, 32-11-1 overall.
UAH starting pitcher Alex Aultman (6-1) went the distance to earn the victory on the mound. Aultman allowed three runs, five hits and struck out six. West Alabama burned through four pitchers with
Steven Glasgow (0-3) taking the loss after pitching three inningsun relief. Glasgow ended allowed three runs on three hits.
The Charger's shortstop Blake Massey ended 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI. West Alabama leadoff batter
Matthew Magee jumpstarted the Tiger offense with a double in his first at-bat. Magee ended 1-for-4.
West Alabama travels Montevallo for its last road game of the regular season Wednesday. The game is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Kermit A. Johnson Field.
“I still believe in this team,” said Rundles. “I believe that we are capable of big things, and if we can get our act together this week we can do some damage in the tournament. We can play with anybody if we do what we are capable of doing.”
