Box Score 2 LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Florida picked up five runs in the top of the eighth inning to take game one of a double header over West Alabama 7-1 on Saturday. UWF completed the sweep blanking the Tigers 3-0 in game two.
“We pitched really well,” said UWA head coach
Gary Rundles.
“We let the first game get out of control. Defensively we made to many little mistakes and let West Florida take control of the game. We are still not doing enough offensive to take the pressure off our pitchers. Game two was a well-played game; unfortunately we could not get the hits when we needed them.”
West Alabama now falls to 21-27 on the season, 13-12 in the Gulf South Conference extending their losing skid to six games. West Florida improves to 33-10 on the year; 17-8 in the Gulf South Conference.
Drew Bryson (5-1) pitched a complete game to win in game one. Bryson claimed eight strikeouts giving up only one run and eight hits.
Taylor Bratton (4-5) pitched through seven innings to get the loss. Bratton recorded his second best strikeout performance of the season dropping six Argonaut batters.
Jake Stephens recorded a complete game to earn the win in game two. Stephens pitched a shutout totaling six strikeouts and relinquishing five hits.
Barry Meeks (3-5) pitched through six innings giving up three runs to take the loss. Meeks also recorded his second most strikeouts of the season with six.
Kaleb Barlow led West Florida at the plate in the first game going 1-for-3 with two RBI.
DJ Turo finished 1-for-3 for the Tigers with a RBI.
Four West Florida batters recorded multiple hits in game two. Alex Greene finished 2-for-2 with one run and one RBI.
Brett Langham finished 2-for-3 for West Alabama.
Both teams will meet for the series finale tomorrow in West Alabama's “Senior Day” at 1 p.m. at Tartt Field. The game will feature 10 West Alabama seniors in their final regular season game.
“We need to come out tomorrow focused,” said Rundles.
“We need the win to gain a little momentum before going in the conference tournament. We will say goodbye to a great senior class tomorrow. This season may not be the best one to remember, but we will remember them. We appreciate their efforts and commitment. Hopefully tomorrow we will get a win and send them off on the right foot.”
