Box Score 2 CARROLLTON, Ga. – West Alabama volleyball took to the court for the first time in the 2013 season in the West Georgia Invitational tournament. The Tigers bounced back from a quick 3-0 loss to Malone University in match one to knockoff Georgia College 3-1 in the second match.
"Today was a really good step forward for us," said UWA head volleyball coach
Jordan Lay.
"We have a lot of positives to build on. We are a young team and we need to stay focused on the positives. We still have a long season ahead of us, and this is the first step. I'm very confident in this team, they learn every time they step on the floor."
Freshman outside hitter Yanehsa Johnson made her presence known early against Malone, leading UWA with six kills. However the Tigers could not slow Malone's outside hitter, Taylor Slauterbeck from posting 11 kills. Senior Lauren Townley also proved effective on the Pioneers' offensive tallying four service aces.
The Tigers fell behind Georgia College in the first set, but swept the last three sets to claim their first victory of the season. Johnson doubled her kills for UWA against Georgia College, but it was junior
Jessica Voyles who led the offense with 14 kills.
The Tigers will return to action in the UWG Invitational again to face King University on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. (C.S.T.). UWA will then wrap up the tournament with a quick turnaround to take on Notre Dame College at 10:30 a.m. (C.S.T.).
