Box Score 2 JACKSON, Tenn. – Left-handers
Taylor Bratton and
Zach Parks combined to limit Union to just three runs as West Alabama swept the Bulldogs, 3-1 and 5-2, in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Saturday at Fesmire Field.
West Alabama began its 11-game road swing by improving to 24-11 overall and 13-8 in GSC play. Union dropped to 12-26 and 5-16.
"It's obvious our pitching was pretty good today and was a key to us being able to sweep," UWA head coach
Gary Rundles said. "Bratton and Parks did a great job in both games commanding the plate and keeping hitters off balance. They also got big outs when it was time to get big outs."
Bratton evened his record at 3-3 while striking out seven and scattering five hits in his first complete-game victory of the season in game one. Parks, who carried a perfect game into the fifth inning, improved to 7-2 while scattering five hits and allowing just two runs over eight innings.
Tanner Rainey worked the ninth in the second game for his sixth save.
Teddy Christie (0-6) and Derek Roof (2-5) were tagged with the Union losses.
In the opener, West Alabama made the most of just four hits off Christie, scoring single runs in the second, third and sixth innings.
Mitch Holgate had two of UWA's hits in game one, including his first triple of the season.
Holgate extended his hitting streak to 16 games with another triple in the second game, but it was
Daniel Bolte,
Joel Murphy,
Jocobby Robinson and
Tyler Richburg who got big two-out hits in extra innings to put the game away for the Tigers.
Tied 2-2 in its seventh extra innings game, Robinson singled in Bolte with the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth in game two. After Holgate walked, Richburg singled in Murphy and Robinson to ice the game for the Tigers, who are now 5-2 in extra frames.
"I don't worry about hitting streaks and things like that," Holgate said. "I just try to stay consistent at the plate. We need to pick up tomorrow at the plate where we left off in the last inning today."
Brad Royer had three hits for Union in the doubleheader, including triple in game two.
The Tigers and Bulldogs play game three of the series Sunday at 1 p.m. Right-hander
Fernando Gonzalez (5-1) will get the start for UWA.
