Buccaneers Hang On to Defeat UWA, 1-0, Tigers Eliminated

Box Score

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Christian Brothers pushed across a run in the bottom of the first inning and that's all starting pitcher Jake Garbuzinski would need while leading Christian Brothers to a 1-0 college baseball victory over West Alabama in an elimination game at the Redzone Gulf South Conference Baseball Tournament Saturday at Young Memorial Field.

CBU improved to 12-36 with its first-ever win in a GSC Tournament baseball game. West Alabama ends its season 27-18.

Christian Brothers pushed across a run in the bottom of the first inning on three hits, but UWA starter Taylor Bratton pitched out of a bases-loaded jam to limit the damage. Josh Hopkins drove in the run with a single to right field.

"It obviously didn't turn out the way we wanted it to," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "We have had difficulty getting the timely hit all year and that was the key again today. There were situations that if the ball fell a different way, things might have turned out differently."

Garbuzinski (2-9) picked up the first shutout win of his career, scattering nine hits, striking out five and walking one. Bratton (4-4) was the hard-luck loser, giving up nine hits while striking out four and walking two.

"Taylor Bratton pitched well and gave us a chance to win," Rundles said. "He gave up that early run and then put up zeros the rest of the way. Giving us a chance to win is all you can ask a starting pitcher to do."

Daniel Bolte had three of West Alabama's nine hits. Jack Cockrum chipped in two singles. Justin Neal, Caleb Goodwin and Hopkins had two hits each for the Buccaneers.

"I really hate the way this ended for our eight seniors, but I am proud of them," Rundles said. "Right now it's difficult for them, but they will look back one day and remember their time as a Tiger fondly."
