LIVINGSTON, Ala. - No. 6 West Alabama baseball hits the road again this weekend, traveling to Cleveland, Mississippi, for a key Gulf South Conference showdown at Delta State.
The Tigers (21-5, 12-3 GSC) and Statesmen (14-10, 9-6 GSC) open the three-game set on Friday, March 20 at 3 p.m., before a Saturday doubleheader on March 21 at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. at Harvey Stadium at Ferriss Field.
Tigers swinging one of nation's hottest bats
West Alabama rolls into Cleveland with one of the GSC's most dangerous lineups, hitting .310 as a team with a .877 OPS and 173 runs driven in through 26 games. The Tigers have outscored opponents 201-95 and own a .447 slugging percentage with 40 doubles, eight triples, and 20 home runs. UWA hitters have also shown patience and toughness at the plate, drawing 133 walks and 52 hit-by-pitches, fueling a .430 team on-base percentage while swiping 45 bases in 57 attempts.
Nick Wilson has anchored the middle of the order, slashing .360/.435/.580 with six home runs and a team-high 29 RBI in 26 starts. Rashad Robinson brings both power and speed at the top of the lineup with a .330 average, 1.066 OPS, eight doubles, four homers, and a team-best 30 runs scored while going 10-for-12 in stolen bases. Hudson Walburn (.326, 21 RBI), Wayne Wilkerson (.407, .593 slugging), and Austin Thacker (.333) give the Tigers length throughout the order, while Diego Bryant (.302, four homers), Aaron Wallace (.279, .403 OBP), and Kyle Blevins (.250, .400 OBP) provide additional run-production threats.
Arms setting the tone for West Alabama
On the mound, UWA enters the weekend with a 3.24 team ERA and 1.25 WHIP, holding opponents to a .222 average over 217 innings. Tiger pitchers have allowed just 78 earned runs while striking out 187 batters, and opponents have managed only 19 stolen bases in 31 attempts against a staff and defense that control the running game. Eight different Tigers own ERAs of 4.05 or better, giving head coach and staff multiple options across a three-game league set.
Blake Westry has been dominant at the front of the rotation, posting a 4-0 record with a 1.64 ERA, 26 strikeouts, and a .202 opponent batting average in 33 innings. Fellow starter Baker Green is 3-0 with a 2.48 ERA and 32 strikeouts over a team-high 36.1 innings, while Colin Woodham (2-0, 2.67 ERA) has added stability with 28 punchouts in 33.2 frames. Out of the bullpen, Thomas Kerby (2.25 ERA, .89 WHIP), Tyler Pierce (2.00 ERA, .103 BAA, two saves), and Camden Lyke (0.00 ERA in eight outings, two saves) headline a deep relief corps that has helped the Tigers close out tight games.
West Alabama's success has also been built on steady defense, as the Tigers field at a .976 clip with just 22 errors in 26 games, compared to opponents' .952 fielding percentage and 43 miscues.
Statesmen dangerous at home
Delta State counters with a balanced offense hitting .269 as a team with a .751 OPS, scoring 168 runs with 33 doubles, three triples, and 13 home runs in 24 games. The Statesmen are aggressive on the bases, going 57-for-62 in steals, and have drawn 119 walks and 47 hit-by-pitches to build a .387 on-base percentage. Leadoff man Austin Estes leads the way with a .364 average, 24 runs, and six stolen bases, while Tucker Jones (.316, three home runs, 24 RBI) and Cade Greer (.253, three homers, 17 RBI, .404 OBP) provide run-producing punch in the middle of the lineup. Jacob Hill (.256, 12 RBI, 15-for-17 in steals) and Levi Lang (.324, .455 OBP) add more on-base and speed threats that will challenge the Tigers' pitching and defense.
On the mound, the Statesmen own a 6.01 team ERA, but have a frontline ace in right-hander Adrian Byrd, who is 3-0 with a 1.72 ERA, 46 strikeouts, and a .190 opponent average in 36.2 innings over six starts. Dawson Muenzenmay (3-1, 2.03 ERA, three saves) has been a steady late-inning option in relief, while Blake King (34.0 IP, 22 K) and Aidan McCrady (19 K in 20.0 IP) have logged significant innings. Delta State's staff has allowed 29 home runs and a .263 opponent average, setting up a strength-on-strength matchup between UWA's deep lineup and the Statesmen arms. Defensively, DSU fields at a .964 mark, turning 11 double plays, with Austin Batts and Stone Collier both flawless so far, but the club has committed 31 errors, a number UWA's aggressive offense will look to exploit.
Rivalry series with postseason feel
Historically, Delta State leads the all-time series 105–49, but West Alabama has gained the upper hand recently, winning five of the last seven meetings on the road in Cleveland. With the Tigers sitting near the top of the GSC standings and the Statesmen looking to climb in the league race, this weekend's series carries early postseason implications.
