UWA Baseball Signs a Catcher and Five Pitchers

LIVINGSTON I Defending Gulf South Conference baseball champion West Alabama used the early signing period to sign six players, five of them right-handed pitchers.

"We are excited about this group of young men," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "You can never have enough good arms and good catchers, so we are looking forward to these guys finding their roles and contributing in 2017."

The lone non-pitcher in the signing class is catcher Jonathan Thibodeau, a 5-11, 200-pounder from Notre Dame Secondary School in Burlington, Ontario, Canada. Thibodeau will be a four-year starter and helped lead his team to 2015 OFSAA Championship.

Four of the five pitchers are entering their senior season of high school baseball. The exception is Braxton Wallace, who is heading into his sophomore campaign at Alabama Southern Community College. The 6-foot, 175-pound Class 2A All-State selection from Leroy High School had 17 appearances as a freshman at Alabama Southern, 16 in relief, finishing with an 0-2 record and a 6.84 earned run average. He pitched 25 innings and struck out 17.

Leighton Lary is heading into his senior season at St. Luke's in Mobile. At 6-1, 220, Lary was named the 2014 Class 1A pitcher of the year after leading his team to a state championship. He posted a 12-2 record with a 1.06 ERA and has been part of two state championship teams. He is a two-time first team all-region, two-time first team All-State selection and the 2014 Mobile Optimist Club High School Pitcher of the Year. He also hit .353 in 110 at bats as a junior.

Peyton Warren, from Franklin Road Academy in Brentwood, Tennessee, posted an 11-2 record with a 1.85 ERA while striking out 87 and walking just 27. At 6-foot-1 and 175 pounds, he also batted .342 with a.467 on-base percentage last season.

From Archer High School in Lawrenceville, Georgia, Cole Waites posted a 1.85 ERA as a junior, allowing just three hits in 11.1 innings pitched. Opponents hit just .071 against the 6-foot-3, 180-pound righty.

Gavin Rogers, who will come to UWA as both a right-handed pitcher and first baseman, was a member of the 2014 and 2015 District All-Tournament Teams and the 2015 Tennessee All-District 5-AAA squad. He batted.336 and posted a 3.59 earned run average, striking out 60 batters in 52.2 innings pitched. At 6-foot-1 and 225 pounds, Rogers is headed into his senior season at Soddy Daisy High School in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
