UWA Softball Welcomes Home 1991 Championship Team

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama softball team will honor and recognize the 25th anniversary of the momentous 1991 Livingston University squad prior to its first pitch of game one of a double-header against Shorter University on Saturday at the UWA Softball Complex.

The 1991 squad comes home to Livingston, 25 years since the close of a storied four years which set a standard for UWA softball for years to come. The team compiled a 146-62 record over four seasons, including four consecutive Gulf South Conference titles and a 17-0 record in the GSC tournament. All members from the four championship teams (1988-1991) will be welcomed and recognized.

To this day, the team still holds the program record of a .791 winning percentage after going 34-9 overall on its way to its fourth title.

Under the guidance of then head coach Janet Montgomery – now the Associate Director of Athletics for West Alabama – the team featured numerous standouts who garnered conference and regional honors and cemented themselves high in the Tiger's record books where they still remain today.

The team included three GSC Academic Honor Roll members, three All-GSC team winners and one All-South Region honoree.

Lori Galloway, who is now a member of the UWA Hall of Fame, was a four-time academic honor roll member and four time All-GSC winner. She still owns seven of the program's career records, including: appearances (135), starts (116), complete games (113), shutouts (24), innings pitched (850), wins (92) and assists (429). She still holds the second best win percentage (.719), ERA (1.42) and sacrifices (39).

Mozette Timmons, also a hall of fame inductee as well as a two-time All-Region selection, maintains her 96 career stolen bases as the most of any other Tiger base runner.

Bobbie Jo Carter, Cindy Wille, Angie Troncalli and DeAnn Mundinger were all effected hitters whose names still sit at the top of the UWA history books. Carter posted the most triples (17), followed closely by Troncalli in second (13). Carter still owns the second most walks (90), fourth most career runs (146) and fourth most hits (185). Wille and Mundinger are tied for third most sacrifices with 37 each.

The 1991 season also featured two no-hitters by one outstanding pitcher, Kaley Kleinpeter. She hurled a 9-0 win over West Georgia on March 15th in Livingston and a 6-0 win over Valdosta State on April 12th at Troy University.

The team will honor a current softball Tiger prior to Saturday's first game with the 2016 Robin Riley Award. The award was established in honor of former player Robin Halbrooks Riley, who unexpectedly passed away in 2015 from medical complications at the age of 30.

Robin was devoted to the game of softball not only as a player but also as a coach. At the time of her death, she served as the assistant softball and volleyball coach at her alma mater, Hartselle High School.

The award serves to recognize a UWA softball player each year who has made a meaningful impact on her teammates by demonstrating outstanding character and a positive attitude on and off the field.

First pitch for game one is set for 3 p.m.
