UWA Men’s Tennis Drops Home Opener to Alcorn State

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Alcorn State won the doubles point and then three of five singles matches that finished on the way to a 4-2 men's tennis victory over West Alabama Thursday at the Vaughan Tennis Complex.

The win was the second straight for Alcorn State, improving the NCAA Division I Braves to 2-9. West Alabama dropped to 1-3 in its home regular season opener.

Christopher Wood and Andrii Stratiienko won at No. 2 doubles for West Alabama, while Anton Lof managed the Tigers only singles win, defeating Ivan Matas 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5.

"It was a beautiful day for tennis against a good opponent and our men did not do what we needed to do," UWA coach Jeff Beaman said. "I saw a few positives, but we are not performing up to our talent level. I am confident we will put it together, but as a group I need more from these guys."

West Alabama returns to action Saturday at Birmingham Southern. Match time is noon. Alcorn State travels to Mississippi College on Wednesday.
