Franklin, Lewis Shine at MC Open: Tigers Post Nine Top Five Finishes

CLINTON, Miss. – Shameka Franklin and Adrienne Lewis won events and West Alabama earned top five finishes in nine events at the Mississippi College Season Opener Saturday at James E. Parkman Track at Robinson-Hale Stadium.

Franklin won the women's 200-meter dash with a time of 25:45 and Lewis was first in the women's long jump with a distance of 6.04 meters. Franklin was second in the women's 100-meter dash, posting a time of 12.62, while Lewis finished second in the women's triple jump by covering 12.19 meters.

"I was pleased with the effort today. We had a couple of provisional qualifying marks and several personal bests," UWA head track and field coach Kirby Walker said. "I look forward to seeing how the performances this week translates to the next meet".

Filling out the field for the MC open were teams from Mississippi College, Belhaven, Blue Mountain, Christian Brothers, Freed-Hardeman, Grambling State, Jackson State, Millsaps, Mississippi Valley State, Montevallo, North Alabama, Rhodes, Spring Hill and West Florida.

The Tiger women's 4x400 relay team composed of Capri Edwards-Mais, Cheyenne Ponder, Terry Sturdivant and Franklin, finished third, while Kentoria Johnson was fifth in the women's 400-meter hurdles.

James Woods was UWA's top men's finisher, finishing third in the long jump with a leap of 7.04 meters. Chris Davis was fourth in the men's triple jump at 13.51 meters and JT Siggers fifth in the men's shot with a put of 13.48 meters.

The Tigers compete at the Southern Invitational hosted by Birmingham Southern College Friday and Saturday.
