#12 Men's Basketball

Tigers Picked Fourth in West, Miles and Pouncy Among Top Newcomers

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of West Alabama Men's Basketball is just a week away from opening Gulf South Conference play on the evening of December 11 against Delta State University in the Walter Silers Coliseum at 6:30 p.m. However, the Tigers will enter as underdogs according to the GSC Preseason Coaches' Poll with UWA picked fourth in the division.

Alabama Huntsville received five first place votes to finish atop the West Division Poll with the other vote going to Union who is second. Delta State is third while the Tigers were picked fourth. Mississippi College and Christian Brothers round out the division picks at fifth and sixth respectively.

The poll in its entirety as well as the East Division results and Preseason All-GSC Teams will be listed at the end of the story.

Due to COVID-19 concerns, the GSC has returned to divisional format for the first time since 2010-11. The top four teams in each division will qualify for the GSC Men's Basketball Championship Tournament. The location for the future event has yet to be determined.

To mitigate possible spread and limit travel, teams will play each other on consecutive days in the same arena before traveling home.

Kortrijk Miles and Kainan Pouncy were selected among the top newcomers in the GSC this season.

Miles, a 6-foot-5 junior guard from Dallas, Texas, spent last season at Temple College where he averaged 19.7 points, 10.7 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 53.5 percent from the floor, 37.5 percent from three and 67.5 percent from the free throw line.

Pouncy, 6-foot-1 junior guard from Enterprise, Alabama, after spending last season at Francis Marion. In six games last season, he averaged 13.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists while shooting 46.2 percent from the floor, 29.2 percent from beyond the arc and 87.5 percent from the free throw line. As a sophomore at Enterprise State CC, averaged 20.3 points, 8.1 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.0 steals per game.

Nick Woodruff takes over as head coach after spending six years as the Associate/Assistant coach with the program. The Tigers return only one player who saw playing time last season in Justin Allison. Last season, the junior guard averaged 6.3 points and 1.8 assists while averaging 20.4 minutes per game.
