UWA Softball Preview at UAH

West Alabama is back on the road for a Gulf South Conference series against the University of Alabama in Huntsville Chargers.

WHEN 
Action set to start Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader. First pitch is at 1 p.m. for the DH and the series concludes Sunday with a single game at noon.
 
HISTORY
The Tigers and Chargers have met 87 times before the weekend and UAH holds a 75-12 edge all-time. West Alabama won three of four meetings last year against the Chargers with two come from behind wins in a three-game set in Livingston on April 5-6 and then UWA won a matchup on the third day of the GSC Championship Tournament 6-1 against Alabama Huntsville to eliminate the team from tourney.

WEST ALABAMA
UWA enters the weekend 5-10 on the season and 2-4 in league play. The team went 1-2 last weekend to open in the home opening series against West Florida in GSC action.
 
ALABAMA HUNTSVILLE
The Chargers are 9-6 to start the season with a 4-2 mark in the conference after dropping the first GSC series on the road this season to Union, winning the last game 6-1 to avoid the sweep. As a result, UAH fell out of the latest NFCA rankings.
 
COACHES
Carie Dever-Boaz is 76-94. (.447) in her 4th season as head coach of UWA Softball, 316-368-1 (.461) in 26 seasons as a collegiate head coach. Les Stuedeman is 1103-369-1 (.749) in her 25th season as a head coach, all at Alabama Huntsville.


WE'VE GOT OUR HAYES ON NOW
Senior outfielder Hayes Fulford has emerged as the batting leader for the Tigers with a.326 batting average, 15 total hits, 11 runs, nine RBIs and four doubles which all lead the team. She's also added three stolen bases and two walks while posting a .780 OPS and .413 slugging percentage.
 
OH CANADA
Cassie Matlock, a native of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, has provided help offensively and defensively for the Tigers so far this season. The junior transfer has a .314 batting average with five RBIs and five suns scored. She has drawn a team leading nine walks and leads all qualifying players with a .455 on-base percentage. Matlock has posted a .963 fielding percentage with 23 putouts, several in spectacular fashion, and three assists.
