#17 Men's Tennis

Catching Up With Ilari

We asked UWA student-athletes to catch us up on what's  happening in their lives since the cancelation of 2020 spring sports. We will feature one a day until those who responded have been used. Today our Q&A Crew catches up with men's tennis player Ilari Vesanen, who was the 2019 GSC Freshman of the Year. Ilari's responses are italicized.

In addition to handling your studies online, what else are you doing to pass the time and for entertainment?
For first couple of weeks I had to stay home in self- quarantine when I got back home to Finland, so I haven't done much yet. I watched movies and planned my summertime schedule and also tried to apply for summer jobs.

Have you been able to find anything or any way to funnel your competitiveness since the cancellation of your seasons?
Since the season was canceled I have now plenty of time to get myself in better shape physically and prepare for fall individual season. The ongoing situation for competing doesn't look good, which means that all tournaments and matches are postponed during summer break time so I will be highly motivated to play again in Fall, hopefully.

Have you been able to find ways to help those who need it during this time while still practicing social distancing?
Needless to say that we are having such a weird and serious time at the moment and everything is totally new and scary for most of the people so I can't judge those who doesn't realize yet how severe the virus is. However, I believe that sooner or later people start to take this seriously without anyone advising.

What are you binge watching?
Before this online transition I hardly had time and interest at all to watch anything, but now I started to watch those old, mainstream series like Breaking Bad and Money Heist. Breaking Bad has been great.

What do you miss most about being at UWA or in Livingston if you are not here?
I think the thing what makes Livy special is that it is such a small college where everyone knows everyone, and among men's tennis team we tend to hang out together every day and do all kind of stuff together. I think that is thing what I miss the most.
