Track & Field Opens Season Saturday

CLINTON, Miss. – The University of West Alabama outdoor track and field team opens its spring season Saturday as one of 22 teams competing at the Mississippi College Outdoor Season Opener at the James E. Parkman Track.

"I'm very excited that our team will have an opportunity to compete again, something that we've been unable to do for a year exactly as of this weekend," West Alabama head coach Kirby Walker. "The Mississippi College Outdoor Season Opener will allow us to execute our training and assess areas that need improvement."

The Mississippi College Opener was the last track and field meet for the Tigers in 2020 before the COVID pandemic caused the remainder of the season to be canceled. No team scores were kept at last year's meet.

Running events on a rolling schedule, first women, then men, get started at 9 a.m. Field events get underway at 10 a.m. Keep up with the meet at http://bwraceresults.com/mc3621/.

"We have several student-athletes that will positively impact our team this year. No one athlete outshines another, as we are a unit, and everyone plays an integral role in the success of this season," Walker said. "I'm excited to see how everyone rises to the challenges we will face."

West Alabama, Mississippi College, Christian Brothers and Montevallo will represent the Gulf South Conference among nine NCAA Division II entries. There are three Division I entries with several from the Division III or NAIA ranks, with a couple of Mississippi community colleges also competing.
