Woodruff GSC Coach of the Year, Two Named All Conference

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After winning the Gulf South Conference regular-season crown last week, the West Alabama men's basketball team was highlighted on the league's end-of-the-season awards, with Nick Woodruff earning GSC Coach of the Year distinction and Kortrijk Miles and Shardarrion Allen being named to the All-GSC teams.

These honors come as UWA ended the regular season 23-5 overall and 16-4 in conference play for the No. 1 seed in the GSC Championship tournament. The Tigers will host No. 8 seed Delta State University tonight in the quarterfinals at 6 p.m. inside Pruitt Hall Gymnasium.

Woodruff is the fifth West Alabama men's basketball coach to receive the GSC Coach of the Year award, and it's the sixth time that a UWA coach has been recognized. Ed Murphy received the honor in back-to-back seasons in 1981 and 1982.

As a second-year head coach, Woodruff has led the Tigers to its first regular-season title since the 2018-19 season, and with a limited 2021 season due to Covid, he holds a 31-11 career record.

Miles and Allen received GSC post-season honors for a second consecutive season. Miles was named to the First Team, and Allen was named on the Second Team.

Miles is second in the league in scoring and first in rebounding. The Dallas, Texas native averaged 18.9 points per game and 8.4 rebounds per game. He has received GSC weekly honor three times this season and has 11 double-doubles. The junior guard had a career game versus Valdosta State with 30 points and 19 rebounds.

Allen is second on the team in scoring and rebounding with 13.0 points and 5.9 boards per game. He was named GSC Player of the Week twice, once for his career game vs. Palm Beach Atlantic with 24 points and 15 rebounds, and for a second time, he had another career game at Valdosta State with 26 points and seven rebounds.
