Tigers Receiving Votes in AFCA Coaches Poll

WACO, Texas – The West Alabama football team will enter the 2022 season receiving votes in the preseason American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Poll that was released on Monday.

The Tigers collected three votes after finishing the 2021 season with seven wins and were ranked as high as 10th in the AFCA Poll.

The Gulf South Conference was well represented in the poll with Valdosta State coming in third, West Florida at 11th and West Georgia checking in 12th. Delta State was also receiving votes in the national poll with five votes.

UWA started last season 6-0 for the first time in program history. Darius Nalls, Michael Anderson and Shamar Lewis were named to the All-GSC Preseason Team as UWA was tabbed fourth in the Preseason Poll.

Head coach Brett Gilliland enters his ninth season guiding his alma mater and recently eclipsed 50 career victories at UWA following the 38-20 victory over West Georgia on Oct. 2 last year.

The 2022 season begins at Morehouse on Sep. 3 in Atlanta. Following another road trip just down the road to Birmingham the next weekend on Sep. 10 at Miles College, the Tigers will have their home opener on Sep. 17 against Tuskegee starting at 2 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
