Hill Sets GSC Record in 100-Meter Dash, Four Tigers Qualify for Nationals

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – West Alabama men's and women's track and field teams had solid performances in the Gulf South Conference Championship meet Thursday through Saturday at Ray Conn Sports Complex. 
 
On the women's side, two GSC records fell and one school record. Kaitlin Hill qualified for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Nationals in three events, 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, and 4x100-meter relay. Joining Hill at nationals are Mikia Hutchings, Annaya Chelcy, and Isila Apkup.
 
Hill dominated on the track, picking up two first-place finishes at the championship meet. Hill set the GSC record in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.57. She also placed first in the 200-meter dash, crossing the line at 24.09.
 
Hutchings ran the 100-meter dash, coming in fifth at 11.93. Chelcy joined Hill in the 200-meter dash. Chelcy placed third and hit a new personal record with a time of 24.49. 
 
Hill, Hutchings, Chelcy, and Apkup beat the GSC record and set a UWA school record in the 4x100-meter relay. The team finished second with a time of 45.43, qualifying them for nationals. 
 
Apkup and Mikeibra Morris ran the 400-meter dash. Apkup finished seventh and crossed the line at 56.87. Morris stopped the clock at 58.90, placing 12th. 
 
On the men's side, Reed Robinson started the meet off with the decathlon. The decathlon consists of 10 events over two days; long jump, shot put, high jump, 400-meter dash, 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, and the 1500-meter run.
 
Robinson compiled 5129 points in the decathlon. He finished first in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:37.84. 
 
Dave Hubert ran the 800-meter run and stopped the clock at 2:00.87. 
 
Audrick Pyronneau and Gary Mata both competed in the 1500-meter run. Pyronneau came in at 4:10.72, while Mata stopped the clock at 4:18.74.  
 
Pyronneau also ran the 5000-meter run and finished with a time of 15:53.4. 
 
Davaunce Norman, Caleb Vann, and Robinson were the only Tigers competing in field events. Norman and Vann competed in long jump and triple jump. In long jump, Norman placed 11th with a leap of 6.36 meters. Vann finished 12th with a jump of 6.29 meters. 
 
In triple jump, Vann finished 10th with a jump of 12.55 meters, while Norman was right behind him in 11th with a leap of 12.31 meters. Robinson's only open field event was pole vault. Robinson cleared 3.50 meters.

Hill, Hutchings, Chelcy, and Isila Apkup will compete in the NCAA Division II Nationals Outdoor Championship meet in Pueblo, Colorado, from May 25 through May 27. Click here for provisional marks hit in every event this year.
