LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The West Alabama volleyball team (2-14, 0-6 GSC) faces a tough road test this weekend as they travel to West Florida (11-5, 6-0 GSC) on Friday, October 11, at 6 p.m., followed by a matchup against Valdosta State (7-7, 1-3 GSC) on Saturday, October 12, at 1 p.m. ET.
West Alabama has struggled offensively, with an attack percentage of .044 and averaging 8.5 kills per set, while their opponents have hit at .199 with 9.9 kills per set. Leading attackers like
Jaida Alvin and
KB Kinney, with 110 and 85 kills respectively, and
Taylor Lamontagne leading the team in assists, 255, will need to improve their efficiency to challenge West Florida's dominant defense and the number one team in the conference, which holds opponents to a .187 hitting percentage and averages 16.5 digs per set. West Florida also boasts a powerful offense, hitting at .259, led by Jenna Zydlo with 149 kills and Gabi Moulton's 10.6 assists per set, orchestrating the attack.
Valdosta State, meanwhile, presents a more balanced challenge, hitting at .187 with Jojo Smith leading their attack with 154 kills and a strong setter in Audrey Bennet with 8.04 assists per set. Their defense is comparable to West Alabama's in blocking, both averaging 1.8 blocks per set, but Valdosta's top dig leader averages 5.06 digs per set compared to ours at 2.75 per set. The Tigers will also need to step up their serving game, as they've struggled with 191 service errors this season.
West Alabama will need to minimize errors and rely on strong performances from their key players to compete against two challenging conference foes this weekend. The Tigers look to pull off a big upset on Friday against West Florida followed by another against Valdosta State on Saturday.
