Rodeo Teams Gear Up for Spring Stretch

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama rodeo teams will start off the second half of the 2023-24 schedule this weekend at the East Mississippi Rodeo Showdown from the Lauderdale County Agri-Center. 

The Tigers will compete in two shows in March. Following a trip to EMCC, UWA will compete at Pearl River Community College in Poplarville, Mississippi from March 21-23. 

Following a break for Easter, the Tigers return to the arena on April 11-13 at UT Martin before shows at Arkansas Monticello (April 18-20) and Northwest Mississippi Community College (April 25-27) to wrap up the regular season. 

The 2024 College National Finals Rodeo is set for June 9-15 from the Ford Wyoming Center in Casper, Wyoming. 

In the Ozark Region standings, the UWA women sit atop the listing, while the men sit in third.

Kota Wilhite is leading the Tiger men, as he sits in third place in tiedown (270), steer wrestling (285) and All-Around (555). 

Blayne Saine is leading the region in tie down roping at 330, while Tyler Lovering is placed in second with 290. 

Cooper Cowan is atop the leaderboard in team roping header with 555 points. 

Taycie Matthews and Jaylie Matthews hold the top two spots in the region in the barrel racing events. Taycie leads with 690 points, followed by Jaylie's 490.

Joanna Hammett sits in fourth place in goat tying (345). 

The Tigers will get going with the spring schedule Thursday night in Meridian from the Lauderdale County Agri-Center. Gates will open at 7 p.m. nightly. Tickets at the door are $10 for adults and $5 for students. Admission is free for children ages 5 and younger, and there will be a pig scramble available for children in that age group.
