Balikis Wins Second GSC Track Athlete of the Week Award

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of West Alabama's Yakubu Balikis has won her second Gulf South Conference Track Athlete of the Week honor after setting the UWA record in the 100 meters at the Berry Field Day Invitational this past weekend. 

The Lagos, Nigeria native won her fifth 100-meter event in six outdoor events this season and set a new school record with an 11.35-second sprint. She surpassed the previous mark by 0.12 seconds. 

Leading the GSC and the South region in the event, she is fifth in Division II in the event. 

In the 200, she improved her personal best by 0.22 seconds, taking third with a 23.58-second sprint. She enters the final two weeks of the regular season ranked 12th in the event and is on top of the GSC and South Region leaderboard. 

UWA will return to action this weekend in split-squad action, as the Tigers will participate in meets at Georgia Tech and Sewanee.
