Men's Soccer Set to Wrap up Road Trip Against Badgers

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama Men's Soccer is set to wrap up their four-match road trip on Friday as the Tigers travel to Mobile for a 3:30 p.m. GSC matchup against the Spring Hill Badgers.

West Alabama (2-2-2, 0-1-1 GSC) enters after tying with Trevecca, 1-1, on Sunday while Spring Hill (2-3, 2-0 GSC) comes into Friday's match after back-to-back wins over Delta State and Mississippi College last weekend.

The Tigers began the 2024 season strong, scoring four goals and only allowing two in their first three matches which led to a 2-0-1 record. Since then, in their last three contests, UWA has only scored two goals and have allowed six, resulting in two losses and a tie. West Alabama's leading goal scorer, David Nunez has failed to score on 11 shots in the past three matches but has the ability to find the back of the net at any given moment which the Tigers will need to break out of their three-match skid on Friday. Even without scoring in the past three contests, Nunez still ranks third in the league with three goals while leading the conference in game-winning goals with two.

Alongside Nunez, Ellis Williamson, Michael Bell, and Aiden Riley have scored for UWA through the first six matches. Bell has the latest goal for the Tigers as the senior found the back of the net in the 35th minute against the Trojans this past Sunday, leading West Alabama to a 1-1 tie. Bell has been all over the field for head coach Ross Nelson's group this season, playing 357 minutes from his Midfielder position. The senior has only fired off shots in two matches this season, so there's a possibility that he assumes a larger offensive role come Friday to help UWA break out of their offensive funk.

Timon Dressel has been in goal for West Alabama in all six matches thus far, making 30 saves which easily leads the GSC and ranks 11th in the country. The freshman's 5.0 saves per match also leads the league and ranks 22nd in the nation, making him one of the top goalies in the GSC and country just six matches into his collegiate career.

Spring Hill has had a pedestrian start to the 2024 campaign, dropping their first three matches of the year to tough Sunshine State teams in Lynn, Embry Riddle, and Palm Beach Atlantic, while defeating Delta State and Mississippi College in conference play. The Badgers have scored eight goals as a team this year, with three of those coming from Forward, Quinn Carper. Carper, a 6'2" sophomore, has done most of his damage off the bench for Spring Hill as he's only made one start in five contests for the Badgers. Carper's three goals have come in the Badger's last three games as the sophomore is a big reason as to why Spring Hill enters Friday's match undefeated in GSC play.

Alongside Carper, Midfielders Adrian Rodriguez and Brett Stow have both scored a pair of goals to begin the year for the Badgers. Rodriguez is arguably Spring Hill's best player as the Midfielder has started all five matches for the Badgers and has only missed one minute of game action thus far. The sophomore also leads the team in shots with nine and will look to put pressure on West Alabama's defense all match long. As for Stow, his goals have come against Palm beach Atlantic and Mississippi College. The redshirt senior hasn't taken many shots this season but has been extremely accurate as his three total shots have resulted into two goals.

While Spring Hill is strong on the offensive end, they've struggled defensively. The Badgers have allowed 15 goals in their five games, which is tied for last in the conference. Goalkeeper, Martin Gomez has faced 57 shots, blocking 20 and allowing 15 to reach the back of net, creating an opportunity for West Alabama to get back into their offensive rhythm on Friday afternoon.

Friday's match between the Tigers and the Badgers is set for 3:30 p.m. in Mobile, Alabama.
