LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama men's and women's cross country teams are gearing up for a strong showing at the Gulf South Conference (GSC) Championships this Saturday at Shelby Farms Park in Memphis, Tennessee. The women's 6k race is scheduled to start at 8:00 a.m., followed by the men's 8k at 8:45 a.m., with the award ceremony to take place at 9:45 a.m.
Leading the charge for the UWA men is graduate student Brenton Mathis, who has been in impressive form this season. Mathis set a personal record of 25:29.9 at the Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and looks poised to use that momentum against the strong competition this weekend.
Freshman Lorenzo Pelusi is another standout for the men's squad. Pelusi recorded his season-best time of 25:58.6 at the UNA Invitational, demonstrating his potential to make a significant impact in his first year with the team.
The men's team has achieved four top-10 finishes this season, including a first-place victory at the Firehawk Invitational.
On the women's side, Sophomore Mercy Lomuria has been a dominant force all season. She has secured two top-10 finishes for the tigers this season and is expected to be a key competitor in the 6k race.
The women's team has secured three top-10 finishes throughout the season.
