MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of West Alabama men's and women's cross country teams closed out their 2025 seasons with a strong showing at the Gulf South Conference Championships on Saturday morning at Shelby Farms Park, highlighted by multiple personal records across both squads.
Sophomore Mercy Lomuria headlined the day for UWA, finishing sixth overall in the women's 6k race with a personal-best time of 21:14.37. Her performance earned her the title of GSC Freshman of the Year, becoming the first UWA runner to receive the honor in program history. Lomuria led a strong effort from the women's squad, as Miriam Dominguez-Tellez, Rita Walker, Augusta Arnold, Laurel Morse, and Kiona McCallister each recorded new personal bests to close the season on a high note.
On the men's side, the Tigers secured a sixth-place team finish, with nearly the entire roster turning in career-best performances. Graduate student Brenton Mathis led the way once again, followed by Gary Mata, Lorenzo Pelusi, Sha'Kenye Darden, Jonathan Phillips, Julian Council, Ray Englebert, and Wilbur Valencia-Nava, all of whom set new personal records in the 8k race.
Saturday's results wrapped up a strong season for both UWA programs, marked by consistent improvement, multiple top-10 team finishes, and standout individual performances. The Tigers will now look to carry that momentum into the offseason as they prepare for the 2026 campaign.
