LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The West Alabama baseball team is back in action this weekend as the Tigers (4-5) hit the road for a three-game Gulf South Conference series against Mississippi College (4-3). The teams will square off in a doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 14, beginning at 2 p.m., followed by a single game on Saturday, Feb. 15, at 12 p.m.
West Alabama enters the series batting .265 as a team, led by
Eli Burwash, who boasts a .400 average with 14 hits, including five doubles and two home runs.
Nick Wilson (.313) and
Joe Watkins (.310) have also provided key contributions, with Wilson driving in a team-high nine runs and Watkins posting a .487 on-base percentage.
Bryce Newman and
Jake Goolsby each have two home runs, adding some power to the Tigers' lineup.
The UWA pitching staff holds a 5.96 ERA through nine games, with standout performances from
Nolan Phillips (0.00 ERA in 4.1 innings) and
Maxwell Schumacher (1.29 ERA in 7.0 innings).
Judah Buckner has also been solid, allowing no runs in 2.2 innings of work. The Tigers' arms will look to slow down a Mississippi College offense hitting .321 as a team.
The Choctaws come in with a strong offensive start to the season, led by Bryce Capobianco, who is hitting .421 with a 1.265 OPS. Mississippi College also has some pop in the lineup, with several players contributing extra-base hits. On the mound, the Choctaws' pitching staff carries a 5.95 ERA, making for an evenly matched series against UWA.
This series marks the start of Gulf South Conference play for the Tigers, who will aim to gain momentum on the road before returning home for more league action. First pitch on Friday is set for 2 p.m., with Saturday's finale scheduled for noon.
