"Continuing to build a strong and dynamic coaching staff is a top priority for us at the University of West Alabama, and we are thrilled to welcome Bo Scarbrough and Damion Square to our football family," said Head Coach Scott Cochran.
Before launching his coaching career with Cochran and UWA, Scarbrough was one of the highest touted recruits coming out of high school. As a Five-Star Running Back that held a No. 12 ranking in the ESPN 300 in the 2014 class, Scarbrough received a plethora of collegiate offers from high level power fives until he signed with Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide, putting an end to his recruitment.
At Alabama, Scarbrough played for three seasons and split carries with NFL Running Backs in Derrick Henry, Kenyan Drake, Damien Harris, Josh Jacobs, and Najee Harris. In his three year collegiate career, Scarbrough rushed for 1,512 yards and 20 touchdowns on 267 carries, averaging 5.7 yards a carry. The Running Back put together his best season with the Tide in 2016, rushing for a career-high 812 yards and 11 touchdowns, leading Alabama to a College Football Playoff Appearance. In the semifinals against Washington, Scarbrough broke the Alabama Bowl Game Rushing record, by recording a career-high 180 yards and two touchdowns to propel the Crimson Tide over the Huskies and catapulting them to the National Championship game.Â
The Running Back ended his Alabama career with two National Championships which came in 2015 and 2017, before launching his professional career.Â
Scarbrough was selected in the Seventh Round of the NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys in 2018. Throughout his NFL career, the Eutaw, Alabama native played for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Detroit Lions, Seattle Seahawks, and Las Vegas Raiders. After four seasons in the NFL, Scarbrough made his debut in the USFL, signing with the Birmingham Stallions in 2022. The Running Back led the Stallions to a USFL Championship in 2022, rushing for 135 yards on 13 carries in a 35-31 win over the Philadelphia Stars.
On March 8, 2024, Scarbrough announced his retirement as a player and is now set to make his coaching debut with West Alabama as the Program's Director of High School Relations.
"Bo's experience and passion for player development will be invaluable as our new Director of High School Relations," Cochran continued.
As for Square, he accepts the first coaching job of his career after playing nine seasons in the NFL. Square kicked off his NFL Career by signing with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent in 2013. For the remainder of his career, the Defensive Lineman went on to play for the Kansas City Chiefs, San Diego Chargers, Cleveland Browns, New Orleans Saints, Chicago Bears, Las Vegas Raiders, and the Cincinnati Bengals before returning to the Chargers on a one day contract in 2023 to retire with the team. Square won an AFC Championship with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2021, propelling him to his first Super Bowl Appearance.
"Damion's expertise and leadership on the defensive line will greatly enhance our team's performance," Cochran stated.
Before making his way to the professional ranks, Square played for the University of Alabama from 2008-2012 while Coach Cochran served as the Strength and Conditioning coach for the program. During his time with the Crimson Tide, Square was instrumental in helping Alabama win three National Championships, coming in 2010, 2012, and 2013. The Houston, Texas native bolstered Alabama's defensive line, recording 93 total tackles, 19 TFLs, and 7.5 sacks in his four seasons under Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide which led to his lengthy NFL career.
After retiring from the game of football as a player in 2023, Square served as a Sideline Reporter for CTSN and is now set to begin his coaching career with West Alabama.
"Both Bo and Damion have played at the highest level, bringing a wealth of knowledge and credibility to our program that will undoubtedly inspire and elevate our players," Cochran continued. "We're pumped to see the immediate impact they'll have and can't wait to show off our new coaching staff at the Spring Game this coming Friday."
