Morton Tabs Ashli Sutton as Head Assistant Coach

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Women's Basketball program and Head Coach Tiffany Morton announced the hiring of Ashli Sutton as the program's Assistant Coach on Tuesday.

Sutton, a native of Jackson, Mississippi, joins West Alabama's staff after a four-year stint at Callaway High School where she served as the Head Girl's Basketball Coach.

"I am thrilled to add Ashli to our staff, program and university," said head coach Tiffany Morton. "She will be working primarily with the guards and focusing on defense. She is committed to her craft and we welcome her with open arms! Our program absolutely just got better! Glad she is a Tiger!"

Sutton's coaching career began in 2015 where she served on Tougaloo College's staff as a student, before graduating in 2018. A couple of years later, Sutton received her Master's Degree from Jackson State University which led to her first full time coaching job. The Jackson, Mississippi Native accepted her first head coaching position at Northwest Jackson IB World Middle School. Sutton led Northwest Jackson to back-to-back undefeated seasons, winning the JPS Middle School District Championship in both years.

"Coach Sutton has a wealth of knowledge and her familiarity with the south and state of Mississippi is exciting," coach Morton continued.

After dominating the Middle School level, Sutton moved to the High School ranks as she was announced the Head Coach of Callaway High School in 2021. When Sutton took the job, Callaway High was fresh off a 1-16 season, but the young Head Coach quickly turned around the program. Under Sutton's tutelage, Callaway High School made four consecutive playoff appearances, three Elite Eight appearances,  won two Regular Season Championships, won the District Championship, and captured their the first State Championship in Callaway High School history.

As Sutton elevates once again to the next level, she holds a 91-35 career coaching record at the High School level, leading to four Coach of the Year accolades.

"Coach Sutton is a proven winner coming off of the first state championship in school history," Morton stated. "Her drive and motivation to hold her players accountable spoke volumes about her and the success she had at Calloway."

Sutton is now ready to advance her career as she joins the Tigers' program that is now entering Year Two of the Coach Morton era.

"I'm honored to join the University of West Alabama as the Assistant Women's Basketball Coach," said Sutton. "This opportunity is a testament to growth, perseverance, and faith in the journey. I will continue to stand by my motto — trust the process — as we build something special together."
