LIVINGSTON, Ala. - After the University of Women's Tennis representatives Shaira Rivera and Khim Iglupas led the Philippians to a promotion to Group Two in the Billie Jean King Cup last year, Rivera and Alexa Milliam are back on the team this year, looking to gain a promotion to Group One.
"This is an amazing opportunity for Shai and Alexa," said head coach Jeff Beaman. "Both have represented their country before in international competition but to have them there together is something special."
Rivera and Milliam began their journey in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Tuesday as the duo led the Philippines to a win over Uzbekistan. As for Rivera, she won her singles match over Daria Shubina (6-2, 3-6, 6-3) after taking doubles along with Milliam (3-6, 6-3, 10-8) in a thrilling three-set contest against Uzbekistan's Shubina and Nigina Abduraimova.
Following their win over Uzbekistan, Rivera, Milliam, and the Philippines dominated Iran in the next round. In doubles, the Tigers' duo defeated Meshkatolzahra Safi and Kimia Tehrani, (6-1, 7-6) before Milliam picked up a clean win in singles over Safi, (6-1, 6-1).
The Billie Jean King Cup will run through June 21 as Rivera and Milliam quests to a promotion to Group One continues.
