Tigers Host UAM in Gulf South Conference Action

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama football team closes a season-long, three-game homestand on Saturday, Oct. 17 as UWA (4-3, 2-2 Gulf South Conference) hosts the University of Arkansas at Monticello in GSC action. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. The game will be aired on FOX Sports, WSLY 104.9-FM and at athletics.uwa.edu. UWA will also provide a live video stream at athletics.uwa.edu courtesy of the B2 Network.

This is the 22nd meeting in the series between the Red and White and UAM (3-4, 2-2 GSC). The Weevils lead the series 12-9, including a 27-14 win in 2008. The series dates back to 1962, a 21-6 victory for the Tigers. The contest marks the 14th straight meeting in the series in which UAM has won eight.

UWA enters the contest having snapped a three-game, losing streak in a 34-14 upset of then 22nd-ranked Delta State in Livingston. The victory was the first over the Statesmen since 2002 and the first in Tiger Stadium since 1993. Junior Terry Allen set the tone, returning the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown thus breaking the GSC kickoff return record and tying the GSC record for kickoff returns for touchdowns with four. The Tigers made their first appearance in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II Football Regional Ranking, grabbing ninth in the Super Regional Two as announced by the NCAA Division II Selection Committee.

UAM racked up a season high 552 yards of total offense in a 34-3 win over West Georgia in the Gulf South Conference TV Live Game of the Week. All 34 points for the Weevils came in the first half, 22 of them coming in the second quarter. The Wolves scored their only points off a field goal with 5:02 left in the first quarter. Junior quarterback Scott Buisson had his season high in passing yards after completing 23 of 36 passes for 349 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. He added 40 yards on nine carries for 399 yards of total offense.

West Alabama returns to GSC play on Saturday, Oct. 24 as the Tigers travel to Carrollton, Ga. to face the West Georgia Wolves. Kickoff at UWG is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. CST.
