MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The University of West Alabama men's basketball team dropped a 62-59 decision to NCAA Division I foe Alabama State on Monday, snapping UWA's three-game winning streak. UWA's Trevell Coleman launched a game-tying three-point attempt as time expired, but the attempt rimmed out to give the Hornets their third win of the season, the second against NCAA Division II opponents. UWA fell to 8-5 on the season, while ASU improved to 3-8 overall. The Tigers led ASU for most of the opening half and built multiple six-point leads during the first 20 minutes. Christopher Duncan gave ASU its first lead of the game since the 16:48 mark of the half. The Hornets extended the lead out to five points before taking a three-point, 31-28, edge into the halftime break. ASU extended its advantage out to as many as seven points on a pair of occasions in the second half, including a 44-37 lead at the 14:26 mark. UWA would even the contest at 46-46 after putting together a 9-2 run that spanned over the next four minutes. A lay up by Brandon Hampton tied the game for the fourth time at 55-55 with 2:12 left in the game. Hampton led all UWA scorers with 15 points and eight rebounds. Senior Jason Swanson added 10 ten points in the setback along with pulling down eight rebounds. Senior guard Richard Sirju turned in nine points while Brian Murphy came off the bench to add six points. As a team, UWA shot below its season average as it connected on 40 percent from the field and managed just three treys in the affair. ASU's Menji Mundadi claimed game-high scoring honors with 19 points. Tramayne Moorer and Tramaine Butler contributed 15 points in the win. The Tigers return to the floor on Friday, Jan. 1 as they usher in the new year in Arkadelphia, Ark. against Henderson State. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. on the HSU campus. UWA will close out competition against the Gulf South Conference West Division on Saturday, Jan. 2 at Ouachita Baptist.
